We all desire to age gracefully, but the journey isn’t without its challenges. As the years go by, our skin gradually succumbs to forces of time and gravity. Wrinkles form, skin sags, and the once-firm contours of youth seem like a distant memory. But the good news is that science and medicine can bring back our youthful look by giving us Ultherapy®.
In the heart of Singapore at Halley Medical Aesthetics, Dr. Terence Tan did his annual session of Ultherapy as part of his anti-ageing regime, and brought us along on his whole Ultherapy treatment journey with him. He also answered our questions on Ultherapy, clearing doubts for those in search of a non-invasive path to skin rejuvenation.

What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy in Singapore is non-invasive micro–focused ultrasound treatment approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) that stimulates collagen production to lift and tighten the skin. It is commonly used for the face, neck, and even the body on the decolletage area. The magic lies in the small, focused ultrasound dots that trigger collagen production.
How is Ultherapy different from HIFU?
Ultherapy and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) both use micro–focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen for skin tightening. The key difference is that only Ultherapy is US FDA–approved, which means that it is well researched in terms of safety, effectiveness, and efficacy. Additionally, Ultherapy offers real-time ultrasound skin imaging, enabling doctors to plan treatments with precision and at places where you need it most.
How long do Ultherapy results last?
Ultherapy isn’t a quick fix. Collagen production is a gradual process, spanning around six months. Results start to show after two to three months, with the best outcome often visible at four to five months. At six months, you’re seeing the full transformation.
Is there any fat loss with Ultherapy?
No, Ultherapy does not lead to fat reduction. The ultrasound energy focuses on tissues around 4.5 mm deep at the most, which is deep for a non-invasive procedure but still relatively superficial compared to where the bulk of the facial fat lies.
Is Ultherapy painful?
Pain during Ultherapy is manageable with oral painkillers and a numbing cream applied 15 to 20 minutes before the procedure. Cooling with a Zimmer cooler which blows cool air onto the face is also used to ease discomfort.
Is there any specific aftercare, like avoiding sun exposure for Ultherapy in Singapore?
Ultrasound treatments in Singapore are independent of sun exposure, so there’s no need to avoid sunlight although you should always apply sunscreen before heading outdoors. As for aftercare, there’s typically no downtime, and you can return to work immediately.
When do I see the results with Ultherapy?
Ultherapy isn’t a quick fix, so immediate results are minimal. Collagen stimulation starts right after the treatment, with some initial effects from collagen contraction. However, as mentioned above, most of the visible improvement comes from the gradual production of new collagen which takes time. You can expect initial results to become apparent within two to three months, while the most impressive improvements are often observed around the four– to five-month mark.
