Fractional CO2 Laser

What is Fractional CO2 Laser?

Fractional CO2 Laser treatment is a skin rejuvenation technique that targets damaged skin layers while promoting collagen production. By using focused laser beams, this treatment creates micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. As a result, collagen production increases, leading to enhanced skin texture, elasticity, and appearance.

One of the main benefits of the fractional method is its ability to minimise downtime while delivering effective results. This approach allows for quicker healing, letting patients resume their daily activities sooner.

What is it used for?

The Fractional CO2 Laser gently peels the skin to improve the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, skin texture, pores, and even pigmentation.

They work by promoting new skin growth and collagen formation, thereby improving the quality of our skin.

Which areas are suitable for Fractional CO2 Laser?

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation: By targeting these pigmented areas, the laser promotes a more even skin tone and enhances overall complexion.

Visible signs of aging

Fractional CO2 Laser therapy is also effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Additionally, it helps firm sagging skin, providing a more youthful appearance by stimulating collagen production and skin tightening.

Skin texture concerns

Individuals struggling with enlarged pores and uneven skin texture can benefit significantly from this treatment. The laser works to refine pore size and smooth out rough patches, resulting in a more polished and uniform skin surface.

How does Fractional CO2 Laser aid in treating acne scars?

The Fractional CO2 Laser works at a wavelength of 10,600nm, which is absorbed by water within the skin. This allows it to create a controlled ablation effect alongside thermal zones known as microthermal treatment zones. By leaving small “islands” of untreated skin between these zones, the laser promotes faster recovery.

This process triggers the skin’s natural wound-healing response, encouraging collagen remodelling and new tissue formation over time. As a result, it can smooth the appearance of scars, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. This technique is frequently chosen for fractional laser resurfacing for acne scars, as it targets damaged skin while helping surrounding skin to support healing. Outcomes vary between individuals, and a medical consultation is needed to assess suitability.

What to expect during treatment?

Consultation and preperation

Before your Fractional CO2 Laser session at Halley Medical Aesthetics, our doctor will assess your skin and concerns to determine the treatment plan. Your skin is then cleansed, and a numbing cream is usually applied for about 15 minutes to ensure a comfortable treatment.

Treatment steps

During the procedure, the laser handpiece is moved in overlapping passes across the treatment area. The number of passes depends on the area and depth of treatment required.

Duration and results

Sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. While some improvement may be visible after one session, most individuals benefit from a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart. This treatment plan will prescribed by your doctor during consultation.

Post-treatment care

Immediate care

Mild swelling or redness may occur after treatment, which is a normal response to Fractional CO2 Laser therapy. Tiny scabs typically form within one to two days. These scabs help protect the healing skin and will flake off by themselves five to seven days post-treatment. Do not pick on the scabs or peel them off as this increases the risk of scarring or pigmentation changes.

Sun protection and post-laser skin

Use a gentle, non-soap cleanser every three to four hours to wash your face. Keep your skin hydrated by applying light moisturisers or doctor-recommended products. You may also cool and soothe the treated area with cotton pads soaked in cool water, especially during the first one to two days.

Sun protection is critical post-laser. Always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen before going outdoors, and avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible to reduce the risk of pigmentation.

Refrain from using harsh exfoliants and skincare with exfoliating acids or retinoids as your skin is sensitive during the healing period. Avoid using makeup during the initial healing period to minimise infection.

While visible improvement can sometimes be seen after just one session, most patients benefit from a series of three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on individual factors such as the severity of skin concerns and how your skin responds to the treatment. A medical consultation is recommended to personalise your plan.
