Acne & Acne Scars

What is acne?

Acne occurs when too much sebum, which is an oily or waxy matter produced by the sebaceous glands, is mixed with dead skin cells, forming a plug in the pores of our skin. When our pores are blocked, bacteria sets in and causes redness, swelling, whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples, leading to pus-filled infections, breakouts, wounds, and scarring.

What are acne scars?

There are two categories of acne scars: hypertrophic scars and atrophic scars.

When the body produces too much collagen in an attempt to heal lesions caused by pore inflammation, we see hypertrophic acne scars, a mass of raised tissue on the skin’s surface, that look like lumps on the skin. But if there is a loss of tissue during the healing process, we see atrophic scars, which leave depressions on the skin.

How to treat acne and acne scars in Singapore?

At Halley, we believe in treating acne with a holistic, multi-step approach, by ridding the acne at its root, getting rid of pigmentation, reducing redness, and removing the scars.

In addition to topical creams and oral medications for acne treatment, we also have lasers, peels, skin healer, and facials to reduce the appearance of scars.

Which treatment is suitable for me?

Regular, daily application of topical creams is just as important as monthly treatments to keep acne under control. Consult a doctor who would be able to make an appropriate prescription upon assessing your skin condition.

Halley’s Acne Buster

This treatment designed by Halley combines the long pulsed laser, chemical peel, and low level laser light into a single, effective treatment for acne.

Creams and medications

Medical topical creams and oral medications can reduce oil, unclog pores, and reduce bacteria that cause acne. Daily application of acne creams can also prevent scars from developing.

Laser treatments

Lasers target acne at the source and reduce recurrent breakouts. The Carbon Laser Peel, is effective against oily skin, blackheads, enlarged pores, and lightens acne scars over time, whereas pico lasers target redness caused by inflammation and acne.

Resurfacing lasers remove the layer of skin that has been damaged and scarred by acne, hence lightening hyperpigmentation marks, red spots, and smoothing deep pits and uneven skin texture.

Examples of resurfacing lasers include the:

  • PicoSure Pro Laser
  • Fotona PQX Picolaser (Pico Laser 532/1064 nm)
  • Fraxel Dual Laser
  • Fractional CO2 Laser
  • Clarifying HydraFacial

On top of HydraFacial’s known exfoliating and pore cleansing abilities, the Clarifying HydraFacial helps to clear clogged pores and control sebum production and is suitable for those who are troubled by mild acne and oily skin.

    Rejuran S

The Rejuran is an anti-ageing treatment for improving overall skin health. In particular, Rejuran S is designed to treat acne scars. Its higher viscosity effectively plumps up depressed acne scars, smoothing them out and making them less visible.

    Light Therapy

Halley’s Intense Pulsed Light Acne Treatment uses the IPL’s ability to specifically target pigment cells to even out skin discolouration, lighten acne scars, and improve skin tone. Halley’s Low Level Laser Blue Light kills acne-causing bacteria and controls oily skin on top of rejuvenating the skin.
